Despite any unpleasant incursions into personal life that may be incurred while partaking in social media, it is advisable to at least have some knowledge of the world at large in which our students roam. I haven't experienced anything nasty so far. This school year I catched out some students who were bullying a class mate on the internet and I could stop this process and communicate with the students about proper behaviour on the internet. Also Hyves, Facebook, Linkedin, Flickr and other media enable me to be in contact with former students enables me to keep track of students in their career after school which is extremely rewarding.
The only thing that bothers me is that I sometimes buy stuff on the internet, and I am not too happy with my credit card number in the database of purveyors. So I check my credit card records meticulously.

I have recently started using Twitter and Facebook in my classroom as an instructional tool. I too, am concerned about potential problems, but I think if you are careful there is more upside than downside.

As an educator, I just find it easier to NOT belong to any social networks (i.e.: Twitter, Facebook, etc...) I do keep a couple of blogs. I use one for my classroom and students, and one for my personal writings. That is about as social as I am willing to to take it. I have just heard too many horror stories of teachers experiencing the negative results from making mistakes on these social networks.
