My oldest child found out the hard way that if you don't measure correctly, expensive fabric is wasted. She never liked math in school but has realized that it is extremely important to her job. It sounds like you have a wonderful math project. They research housing, cars, groceries, entertainment, etc and find out the amount of money it would take them to live the way they want. They then find a job and connect the schooling, loans, etc it would take to get them there.
